The fine art of Distractibility
or clotheslines, painting my nails in the sun as a choice
Distractibility :
the quality or state of being easily distracted
or another definition
A condition in which the attention of the mind is easily distracted by small and irrelevant stimuli
Well I wouldn’t say the abrupt, unnaturally early and most welcome onset of Spring could be classified as “small and irrelevant stimuli “.
Nevertheless call it what you will but I am deeply distracted.
From hanging clothing and sheets on the clothesline to painting
my toenails in the sun..All seasonally appropriate and relevant (to me). The smell of fresh sheets from drying outdoors is heavenly as is the act of hanging them on little wooden pegs . such a simple and satisfying ritual . My toenails were crying for colour .
We are in the pre-bug pre-intense heat stage of Spring ..which is leaning towards heading back to single digits of temperature next week ..So it’s a bit of a tease.
Everyone on my property including the newly arrived birds are living it up .
So it is extra hard to hunker down to make art. I am thinking this is a universal issue on beautiful balmy days for all creatives (Unless you have a deadline of course) As a natural procrastinator I can easily persuade myself that I need to do something else other then what is on my drafting table . I seemed to have moved away from the housework and chores first phenomenon - a definite move in the right direction yet..
I am in a bit of a stuck place.
Rudderless at the moment. I have a commission I am currently working on ..My sketchbook is calling me as is my new gouache palette . (It’s shiny and begging to be used.) As much as I know it will give me pleasure and a “high” the resistance is there .
I have the solitude and the time I need . As I have moved away from my frenetic making state I am left at times in a bit of a lost state.. I am chalking it up to transitional adaptation -And now Spring! Geesh!
Do you experience this kind of distractibility sometimes..?
If so do you go with the flow or push yourself a little?
I will let you know if I manage to extract myself from this state later on ;-)
Cheers Heather
I love the timing of your writing. I was just reading about 'lying fallow'... and it seems similar to this feeling you describe of being on the edge of...something... but not forcing the 'something' into being. Enjoy another lovely spring/summer day!
What beautiful photos and writing!
We really are in the same head space right now!
I love that you are embracing it and painting your nails! 💪💪💪
